Ariel has been stolen from Earth by a lizard-like race, the Anzons, in order to see if she is compatible to breed with their men. When they discover she isn’t, they decide to give her to the winner of a contest among another group of men, the Zorn, whom they have captured and are forcing to work as miners. Ral sees Ariel and wins the contest making her his woman. Ral is no brute and wants Ariel to accept him willingly so he attempts to learn everything about pleasing her. But once they escape the Anzons, will the people of Ral’s home planet ever accept her?

I was quite fascinated with the story Ms. Dohner tells in Ral’s Woman. The plot moves quickly and is very interesting with the three different races interacting. Ariel is a strong woman who is initially very frightened by what is happening to her but shows a great deal of resilience in dealing with her changed circumstances. Ral is both human and alien enough to make him quite fascinating to read about, especially with the different sexual customs in his world. Once Ariel realizes that Ral wants to bond with her permanently, she opens up and shows him a few human tricks that definitely have his eyes rolling in the back of his head. I also enjoyed that the conflicts Ms. Dohner puts in their path were dealt with by them together and did not create a lot of artificial melodrama and fights between them. The lovemaking is both tender and adventurous as they explore the possibilities. Fans of science fiction romances will definitely want to pick up Ral’s Woman.
