September

Where has the time gone? It’s September!!!

I know...I haven’t updated my blog and I apologize. Summers are always hectic when you have younger kids still at home. What did my summer consist of? Helping my mom settle in more. She moved from California to Nevada to be closer to us. I got the O.H (office house) up and running. It’s fully functional and even has some bonus features like a pool table and a few large screen TV’s for movie viewing. I had a few guests come visit the O.H too. Author Ditter Kellen stayed at the O.H twice, Author Allie Standifer spent a week with me. Ellora’s Cave has a radio show called Cave Chaos and two of the hosts stopped by on their way to California to say hello. It was fun having Ramrod watch Hansel and Gretel - Witch Hunters at the O.H and Jose from Da Hood spent some time with Mr Laurann at my home. I also had leg surgery to remove a cyst (nothing major - I’m still healing up from it). I’m also gearing up to go with Mr Laurann to Romanticon in Ohio for six fantastic days to spend time with everyone there from Ellora’s Cave, a bunch of author, and readers. The Cavemen will even be there (Ellora’s Cave cover models).

What’s new? I finished writing True - the 11th New Species book! It’s a monster of a book on word count. I hope no one reads it and says “It’s too short.” LOL! There was a lot of story to tell about True. You’ll see some of your favorite Species in the book. A lot more stories are coming. I get many emails asking about that. I can assure you there will be books coming out in that series for years to come. It’s gone into edits and that takes a little time. After they are done, a release date will be set and I’ll announce it. For now...I can give you the cover. I love it. Ready?

In other news...I’m working on Blackie’s story and should have it finished soon. It’s a Cyborg Seduction book. More are planned. Cousin Brand from Mating Heat series will be the next book in that series. More of them are planned as well. I have a to write list that is pretty long. I’m going to finish the last three Zorn books and you’ll see more of the Raines brothers in the not so distant future from the Riding The Raines series. It’s been a hectic year so I’m still behind but I’m slowly catching up!

I’ll do a quick most asked questions section since I get a lot of emails. Here goes.

Q - Is there anywhere that I can buy New Species, Cyborg, or other merchandise for your books?

A - Not right now. I get that a lot and have looked into it. Right now I’m really just trying to get the books out. Some contests are held on my official Author page at Facebook HERE so like my page and you might win something!!! Author Ditter Kellen runs them.

Q - Does (insert name here) get a book?

A - Most of the Species you’ve read about get books. I have a LONG list. The most asked about are Breeze (yes), Ven (yes), Brass (yes), Darkness (yes...NEXT book after True!!!), Jaded (yes), Jericho (yes), Smiley (yes), and Flame (yes...and it’s Amanda). There are a lot more. All the Raines brothers including Trip and Adam get books in that series. All the brothers, including cousin Brand get books in the Mating Heat series...and even Alpha Elroy. There are three more Zorn Warrior books planned for Zorn. Vhon, Vinlotti, and Coto. I might write more later but for right now...that’s it on that list for ZW. Cyborg Seduction and New Species are open series which means I’m always adding names to the lists of books to write so plenty more Cyborgs including Sky, Deviant, and Mavo...just to name a few.

Q - Do you REALLY have an O.H? What is the O.H?

A - Yes, we really bought a house that is about a block away from my home to write at. I have three kids at home, 5 cats, and a wonderful husband. I wrote my first book in 1993. I went on to write 54 more until that 55th one was Ral’s Woman and Ellora’s Cave picked it up to make me a published author in 2009. I always wrote in a corner of my living room hunched over my computer screen so my kids couldn’t read over my shoulder. It was grand central because we have four kids (our oldest is married, has a child, and lives on her own now). It was...crazy! Hectic! Now I write full time and Mr Laurann is retired so he’s my wonderful ‘House Hunk’. It’s worth every penny to have a quiet place to write with no distractions. It also gives us space to have visitors stay from time to time. It was a dream of mine since I started writing to have a writer’s retreat. It came true. It’s a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house and I took over the master bedroom as my office. It even has a balcony and a view so I’m inspired late nights when I go outside to sit at the table out there. I needed more room too with all the promo stuff I do. I’ve got it now. It has a loft we turned into a library. The living room has a pool table. The fridge is full of iced coffees. Here are some pictures and you’ll even get to catch a pic of Mr Laurann playing some pool.

Q - What is the best advice you can give an aspiring author?

A - Love to write, write what you love, and don’t give up! I’m going to be blunt. I’m a high school dropout. We were poor with four kids so going back to finish my education wasn’t an option. My spelling sucks. My job history is...if it paid the bills...I’ve done it. In other words...not impressive. I spent most of my time as a housewife up to my ears in dirty diapers and trying to get cartoon songs out of my head when they got stuck from watching so many of them with my kids. I had a dream though. I loved to write. I wasn’t sure how to get published or even if I had what it took. Some people laughed at me or dissuaded me from it. I got the whole...well, I told you my background. They didn’t think I could do it and was wasting my time. It didn’t matter. I was going to write regardless of if I ever got a book published. It’s a part of me and who I am. It’s what I love. Bottom line...don’t give up. You can improve your writing skills. I’m always learning. I’m always pushing myself to write better. My editor is amazing and has taught me so much. Every book edit is my classroom and I try really hard to get an A. LOL. Just hang in there. Don’t give up. Do research online and have people read your books. Stick to it. Ask for HONEST feedback and be willing to listen to any critique. It’s how you learn and get better. It’s how I’m always learning and getting better. Just hang in there and write. If it’s your dream...don’t give up. 1993-2009. That’s how long it took me as an example of clinging to a dream. It was worth it!

Okay...last but NOT least...speaking of dreams...my critique partner had a dream too. Kele Moon is an amazing person who wrote for years and finally became published. She wrote a story some years ago in a series that I was lucky enough to read about two years ago. She sat on the series because she was worried people would find it controversial because the two leads are cousins. Remember in the old days when royalty would marry their cousin? Think modern day and they are werewolf royalty. Their entire race depends on them to mate to save the fate of their future. The story made me cry, laugh, and haunted me. I loved it. It’s coming out on September 22nd. Finally. I’m so proud of her for braving her fears and that’s what being an author is about. It’s writing a story that came from your heart and putting it out there for the world to see. So...congratulations, my dear friend. You ROCK!

Here is the LINK to the website for the series. Please give it read. Just get the tissues out and prepare to go for an emotional rollercoaster. No one can me feel an array of emotions like Kele Moon when she writes a story.

Have a great week!

Laurann

  2. The cover is great! You are prodigious, truly - ooh a pun! And Kele's story sounds great too. The cousins thing - well if historical books were accurate - we'd all be throwing our arms up in the air about girls who were far too young to be married!

I am so happy to see all the books you plan to write and all the charachters from various series I have come to enjoy knowing by reading about them and looking forward to more of those characters being written about. You are one busy lady, but you make me so happy and I am sure I am only one of many who love your books. Thanks for being such a fantastic writer and person. Bye for now, Judy King

  21. Thank you. I was gone all day...sorry for the delay. I had to run a ton of errands for the kids and the Mr is sick. Poor baby. Please share about books if you get the urge. That would be fantastic.

True - we met him in Moon's story. He's the one who let him out the side gate. I got an email today saying they were guessing (a group of readers) that 927 is True. No, he's not. 927 will have a book though. He will get a name too.

Cyborgs...I write partials so I'm well into their storylines. Let's just say that Deviant is Mavo's son...and after Deviant's book...Mavo is going to be single again. He'll get a book. LOL!

Some of my covers are cavemen from Ellorascave. Some are from stock photo sites that were bought. The model on True is a stock photo so I don't know the model's name. Syneca makes the covers and she's really...awesome! LOL!

Thank you so much for all the comments. You guys are fantastic. :)

  26. As I scrolled (very slowly) down the cover for True, all I saw was that hair over the shoulder, around his neck and I sucked in a breath. Dear Lord is that . . .no, no it's not, I realized as I scrolled further down. We're never going to see that smile again, hear that laugh. A year; it's been a year. I sometimes forget God wanted his angel back :'(

    1. You bring up a good point. Never thought of that. Could be a possibility. It will be interesting to see if that is why.

      Delete
    2. Hi Julie and S! I think that's exactly why Kit is so mean. I think she really wanted to mate with Justice. In Obsidian's book, Moon says to Allie in Chapter 14, "Don't mind her. The last male she was interested in mated with a human". This was after Kit flirted with Obsidian in front of Allie. Until Justice mated with Jesse, Kit's attitude was never an issue.

      Delete
    3. Yeah thats what i thought, and added together, ive done re reading on all new species and it occurred to me that Kits attitude changed after Justice mated Jesse x and that line from moon kind of sealed the deal for me x

      Delete
    4. Yes that’s what I suspected as well. I am actually very curious whether kit will end up with a human and if it will be Jesse brother for some reason that’s who I think she might end up but you never know lol

      Delete
    5. Hi

I think there's more to Kit being a bitch; her being pass up for Jessie just added to her already mean attitude.

      Just saying.
      LOL

Im stoked theres another New Species book coming soon :) Ive started reading them again, they're so good!, and esides I was in withdrawal ;) Thank you! for answering questions, I had been wondering if Breeze would get a happy ever after, I love her character! I was also wondering what had happened to 927 so Im very happy to hear there will be a story about him coming. Keep it up your books are fab!!

  30. More NS teasers from Laurann:

"Smiley is going to meet a nice girl who is engaged to a guy whose father is a religious nutball who HATES the NSO. Harley is going to meet a woman who needs some help. NS females...one will get pregnant (not Breeze) by a human in a future book and it will help them figure out how to get other females pregnant. Creek doesn't have a book on my list yet but I might add her."

LD predicts an early December release for TRUE. Late November if all goes well. Here's to positive energy and getting our NS fix by Thanksgiving. She says that when she gets the edits back, she will post a snippet of TRUE.

  32. Hi everyone! I've been offline the last week or so, do to the fact that I had to move all my stuff out of my room while my cracked and broken ceiling was replaced! The room still needs to be painted, so I still can't move all my stuff in yet, but at least my computer is back in action! YAYYY!

Anyway, Laurann, so glad to see you back, and hope that things have calmed down for you a little bit.

Looking forward to reading True! A December release date would be fantastic, but a November date would be a beyond awesome birthday prezzie!

  34. Hi Martha some recommendations.
T.A. Grey is worth a look and most of the first books in her series are free on Amazon.
    Elisabeth Naughton is really good.
Alyssa Day her Warriors of Poseidon series is a completed set as well.
Mary Wine she’s really good she dose futuristic and historical books.
Michelle M Pillow new dragon lord book has just released as well.
These are just to name a few I have lodes more lol.

I cant wait for True am having to restrain myself and read other books and not reread the NS books so as not to completely obsess over the NS books (its not working lol) I even looked up when thanksgiving is as being English I only know its sometime in November hope we will have a date very soon.

Thank you so much for all the information you put on here about future books and the coming soon books.
I read somewhere that True’s love interest is arrested by the NSO and all I was thinking was is that right? Why? is she a member of the hate groups? is she an ex Mercel employee? Why? Why? Why? Am I even going to like her? Is she being forced to do something? Oh my god does any one know anything about this?.
Hopefully will have a blurb soon.

I'll give Alyssa Day and Elisabeth Naughton a try. Thanks!

  35. Okay, I was wondering, in some of the books, it's mentioned that a woman was originally responsible for their genetics but when realized what they intended to do with her work, she destroyed her work and left. Question is: Will she be coming back in future stories? What exactly happened to her? Could she be of importance to the series? I think her story should come out. There is a lot unanswered questions that she would be able to answer. Maybe her daughter gets mated to one or maybe she ended up mated to one herself which made her change her whole outlook on what happened....It would definitely be interesting....

    1. Hi Anon,
I've often wondered the exact same thing! The original researcher would have been an adult when NS was created. Most of the NS are 30+ years old now, so I think it's unlikely she would mate with a NS since she would likely be 60-80 years old. (Maybe Tim Oberto, though) BUT, I think her daughter or niece might. I posted this question on LD's facebook page. I'll let you know what she says.

  36. The books listed below are some of my favorite books / authors. If you have not read M / M books earlier, these are certainly worth a try.
I promise you that you will be pleasantly surprised!!

Kendall McKenna: "Strength of the Pack" (The Tameness of the Wolf, 01) I give her 5+ stars! Loved this book and look forward to her next in the series.

Ariel Tachna & Nicki Bennett: "Under the Skin" (Russian mobster/Police detective)

Jez Morrow: "Belowed Captor" and "Force of Law" Lovely books!

Lynn Hagen: Brac Pack 1 - 30! The first book in the series is not so good, but from book # 2 and beyond... (Need to read book 1 for learning about the "world") Wolfshifters/human.

    J. P. Bowie: "The Set Up"

    J.P. Bowie: "A Highlander in L.A."
An 18th century time travelling Scot finds the man of his dreams in present day Los Angeles.

When on duty LAPD officer, Darren Holden, is told to check out a possible dead body lying in an alleyway, he finds a man who is unconscious but very much alive. Not only alive, but gorgeous—and wearing a kilt. Darren is sure he knows the man, he just can’t remember where or when they might have met. It isn’t until that night, unable to sleep, that he realises the stranger is a man he’d been dreaming of for some time—a man who had made love to him night after night.

For some really good ménage book I recommend:
Shayla Black: "Dangerous Boys and Their Toy"

Trading orgasms for information isn't their usual way of doing business, but when a missing criminal-turned-star-witness and fifty grand are on the line, bounty hunter R. A. Thorn and Detective Cameron Martinez are prepared to put their bodies to the task and give gorgeous Brenna Sheridan everything she needs. An exchange they never anticipated becomes an experience none can forget — or walk away from. Sexual hunger sizzles the threesome, but the stakes and danger rise as a mafia bad-ass stalks Brenna.Soon, their "deal" is no longer about information — or sex. Emotions bind Brenna, Cam and Thorn together more tightly than they ever imagined as the men protect — and serve — the beloved woman neither can live without.

    Best wishes from Norvegicus

    2. You have something to look forward to as still not have read Kendall McKenna "Strength of the Pack." I was completely enthralled of this book.

Kendall McKenna's knowledge about men in combat shines through this book like a beacon of hope, glory and camaraderie that makes it very hard to put down once you start. Her descriptions of the challenges these men face in hostile country are breathtaking, her wry humor at tackling them inspirational and above all, her in-depth knowledge of her subject matter simply incredible. The word she has created of both human and werewolves working side to side to fight the evil that threatens the world is creativity at its best.

Noah and Lucas's emotions run through this book like a river unleashed, each page bringing the two closer together in a way that neither of them ever envisaged. The rapport between the two men is tender, rough, violent and sexy and the bond they share is heartwarming. Their fierce desire to both protect and support each other, both as brothers-in-arms in the military and in their personal relationship is tremendously uplifting.

I love the way Ms McKenna writes with such ease, her detailed and realistic scenes, her dialogue and her story lines that blow me away each time I read something of hers.

  37. There are a few from Kim Dare that I like:
With a Kiss: Liam is in an abusive relationship with a total rat-ba$tard named Ralph. The only time he can really get away is when he goes to his volunteer job at the local hospital, where he talks to comatose patients. One of the patents is Marcus, a vampire. (The existence of vampires is not a secret, but they are not much liked or respected.) One night, on New Year's Eve, after a serious beating, he visits Marcus, and as midnight strikes, Liam gives Marcus an innocent kiss - and wakes him up.

I also like her Avian Shifters series - Duck! and Magpie!
Duck! is sort of a retelling of The Ugly Duckling, and Magpie is a sequel but with a different couple.

  38. Here's a few of the books I've recently read. Most are the latest in a series.

Blood Mate--Mina Carter, sequel to Perfect Mate. It has werewolves, vampires, and zombies. Oh, my!

Aramus--Eve Langlais, 4th in her Cyborg series

One Lucky Vampire--Lynsay Sands, 18th? in her Argeneau vampire series, but any of series can be read alone.

Posession--J.R. Ward, 4th in the Fallen Angel Series

UnAttainable--Madelaine Sheehan. 3rd in her UnDeniable series. If you like it gritty and real, this series is for you.

    New Indie Authors I love:

Jason Brant. Young writer who does horror, zombie apocalypse stuff. His writing is fast paced and exciting.

    C. Gockel. Has a series called I Bring the Fire. All about Loki, the Norse god interacting with Amy and saving the modern world. She does an excellent job of Norse history with a modern action/mystery tale.

M.K. Eidem. She has 2 books out. Grim and Cassandra's Challenge. Both are seriously in need of a good editor for mis-spelled words, but the story telling itself is very good.

    ReplyDelete
  39. J.R.Ward is one of my favorite authors too.

After your recommendation I will look into C. Gockel. Never heard of him / her (?)
But I love Nordic mythology. How many books are there in the "Bring the Fire" series?

(I apologize for the bad English, but English is my third language.)

  40. Hi Norvegicus. I've read all of J.R. Ward, too. C. Gockel is a woman. There are 3 novellas in the series. The first of which, I Bring the Fire: Wolves is a free e-book here in the states. There is a follow up 4th novella, that gives alternate endings, but isn't necessary for the enjoyment of the series. I think you will really enjoy the series. It's not a sexy read, but a fun one. You can read excerpts from her tumbler page. Here's the address:

I think the series has picked up considerably after the bad book No. 19, and after that it has been getting better and better. The last release was the same quality as those in the beginning of the series :-)

    2. Actually Jericho makes his first appearance in Tiger's book. He drives Zandy around in the golf cart after Smiley gets too interested in Zandy. :)

  44. That's amazing info Martha! Thanks for posting! Wow, that's bound to be an explosive story!

My question is, when is the news going to come out about NS babies? 'cuz you know that's gonna happen eventually, and what a sh*tstorm that's gonna be!

  45. Hi ladies here is a book to check out, Erin Simone Whispers Of Night. It was a really good book. Cover is wow! It is a vampire paranormal romance. I came across it on accident and thought I'll give it a go and am so glad I did. Can't wait for the others.

    1. Hi S, I downloaded a sample to check it out. I usually subscribe to the $1 per page credo for new authors, but I'm willing to give it a chance on your recommendation. :) For what it's worth, I noticed the author used to be with Siren publishing. I'm beta reading for an author with Siren right now and she said that their editors only help with typos, not with anything else. I find that strange.

  46. LD says that TRUE is almost done in edits. YAY! *high fives, everyone* She is just finishing up BLACKIE from the Cyborg Seduction series. As soon as she gets the edits back from TRUE, then BLACKIE will get sent in. When she returns from Romanticon (Oct. 10-13) she’ll finish up Cousin Brand’s story for Mating Heat. So, we could be looking at 3 LD books released by the end of the year! Woop, woop!!!

  47. I just finished reading Darkness Rises by Dianne Duvall, and absolutely loved it! If you like vampire stories with lots of both heart and humor, this is the series for you. I guess it could be read as a stand-alone, since each book in the series follows a different couple, however, there is a long story-arc as well. So much of it wouldn't make sense if you started in the middle. Anyway, the first book is called Darkness Dawns. Check it out!

  48. Thanks again for the news, Martha! I think I better go back and read at least a few of the Cyborg books as a refresher. (What a chore that will be, right??)

  49. Forgive me if this is a dumb question (I a new here). Will any of the female New Species get their own books, or will we just see their stories in the guys books?

    1. Some of the "gift"-females will also get their own books.

  51. If anyone didn't follow the last blog post that LD posted in June, there is a rundown of upcoming books and storylines posted in the comments section. Just scroll down to September 8, and there is a 3 part update.

  52. Hi i know this is out of the blue but dose anyone know if anymore of Laurann Dohner books will be turned in to audio books like moon for example as her last book on audio is shadow. Will her new books be audio Moon, True, and all her upcoming books hope so but can't find any information on it.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I believe I read on FB that she hopes to have all of her books eventually out on audio. They conversion tends to lag several months behind the publication of the print and ebooks. So, in other words--don't give up hope.

  54. thank you Martha hope they do love them i can have my favorite book on the go and be doing work at the same time :-)

  57. Hi, I just recently discovered the NS series and I instantly fell in love! From the first book I knew I had hit gold! Since then I've been obsessed and reading like crazy!!! I can't get enough!! So obviously I'm thrilled to hear about True! Can't Wait!!! But I was also wondering whether Trey is going to get a book? I know he isn't New Species but maybe he could end up with a NS female?

  58. hi Gabrielle if you go on to the older post and look at Martha she has put this in 3 part post she She gathered lodes of information on NS and there upcoming books it answers quite a few questions. but yes its hinted at it ;-)

  59. I wonder if there will ever be a baby girl to one of the new species men. I can only imagine how over protective they would be of her

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That would be wonderful and maybe they just have more chance of having males and females are rare but not impossible after all there have only been a few births

    2. Yes. LD says one of the Gift females will get pregnant and she will deliver a girl. From her, they will figure out how to fix the fertility problem of NS females. LD says that Beauty/Shadow will not be the first couple to conceive, but that they eventually will. I have a feeling that it may be Shane and his Gift female. (Story is WIP)

  60. Does anyone have a release date for True. I am running out of reading options. Having NS withdrawls

    1. It shouldn't be too much longer. LD got the edits back and is in the process of signing off on them. I would imagine we should find out about pre-sell/release dates soon.

  61. Fun piece of trivia. Did you know that when LD originally started writing NS "way back when," that in her rough drafts Valiant's name started out as Valmont?

So glad she changed her mind on that one! LOL

  62. Haha yes am very glad she changed her mind on that one ;-)
Dose anyone ever wonder if Tammy and 927 speak to each other or if they are friends at all? I would like to think so.
